THE CHURCH
UNIVERSAL SYRIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH
of antioch

Roots of the Syrian Orthodox Church can be traced back to the very dawn of Christianity, to the church of Antioch, where the disciples were first called Christians (Acts 11: 26). It is the first established church in Christianity gathering converted Jews and Gentiles in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the second church after that of Jerusalem. Ecclesiastical history and traditions tell us that St. Peter the Apostle established a church in Antioch (+ 37) and became its first bishop. After his martyrdom, he was succeeded by Euodius for the converted Jews and St. Ignatius Noorono (the Illuminator) for the converted Gentiles.

The Syrian Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch used to be known by his own name; however, since 1293 the patriarchs of Antioch adopted the name Ignatius (after the Illuminator). The See of Antioch continues to flourish till our day, with H.H. Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, being the 123rd Patriarch in the line of legitimate patriarchs.

The Church justifiably prides itself as being one of the earliest established apostolic churches. It was in Antioch, after all, that the followers of Jesus were called Christians as we are told in the New Testament, The disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. (Acts 11:26).

Christ is the head of the Church.

The Church, who is the bride, is the completeness of Yeshuwa, who in turn is the one who completes everything.

Through out the Holy Book, from Genesis to Revelation and in all the important events in it we read about spiritual beings called the Angels. Those Angels witnessed the creation of man, accompanied him in his glory and humiliation, in his rise and fall, in his sinfulness and righteousness. They escorted the Lord, God, along the way towards redemption.

The Urgency of Preparation

As we await the imminent return of Yeshua (Jesus), it's essential to remember that our time on this earth is short (1 Corinthians 7:29, Romans 13:11-12). We don't know when our lives will come to an end, and material possessions won't be able to save us in our final moments (Matthew 16:26, Luke 12:15). The Bible reminds us that we can't take anything with us when we leave this world, except for our souls and the deeds we've done (Revelation 14:13, 2 Corinthians 5:10).

The Importance of Good Deeds and Obedience

Our good deeds, done in obedience to the Lord's commandments, can be a testament to our faith and a reflection of God's love in our lives (Matthew 5:16, Galatians 6:9-10, John 14:15). By following the Lord's commandments and living a life of obedience, we demonstrate our love and commitment to Him (John 14:21, 1 John 2:3-5). However, it's not just our deeds that will determine our fate, but also the grace of Almighty God (Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 3:24). The Bible teaches us that our names are written in the Lamb's Book of Life if we have put our trust in Jesus Christ and followed His commandments (Revelation 3:5, 13:8, 20:12, 21:27, John 14:15).

The Importance of True Repentance

True repentance is a crucial aspect of our walk with God. It involves a genuine turning away from sin and a turning towards God (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9). Without true repentance, our faith is empty and our relationship with God is hindered (Matthew 3:8, Luke 3:8). As we await Yeshua's return, let's examine our hearts and repent of any sin that may be holding us back from experiencing the fullness of God's love and grace (Psalm 51:10, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

A Glorious Inheritance

For those whose names are found in the Lamb's Book of Life, a glorious inheritance awaits - the Golden City of Heaven, shining with immeasurable beauty (Revelation 21:18-21, 22:1-5). This City is adorned with precious stones and radiates the glory of God (Revelation 21:11, 19-20). We will dwell in the presence of God, basking in His love and light, and enjoying an eternity of fellowship with Him (Revelation 21:22-27, 22:3-5).

A Call to Preparedness

In light of these truths, we're called to be prepared and ready for the Lord's return (Matthew 24:44, Luke 12:40). Let's focus on building our relationship with God, following His commandments, doing good deeds, and living a life that honors Him (Colossians 1:10, 2 Peter 3:14, John 15:10). May we be found faithful and ready when Yeshua returns, having kept His commandments and done His will (Matthew 7:21-23, Revelation 22:14).
